Best Smart Christmas Lights: A UK Buyer’s Guide

Cosy living room with colourful smart Christmas lights, a multicoloured Christmas tree, and festive holiday decorations

The best smart Christmas lights are the ones that suit the display you want to create. For a tree, length and light density matter. For a window, a curtain display may be more useful. If your priority is app control, daily schedules or matching an existing smart home, the controls deserve as much attention as the colour effects.

This UK buyer's guide compares different approaches, including Zyko, Twinkly and Philips Hue. It is a retailer-authored comparison based on published product specifications, rather than a hands-on test or an independent ranking.

Which smart Christmas lights should you shortlist?

Start with the display and the control you need

Option Reason to consider it Important distinction
Zyko Smart Christmas Tree Lights RGBIC strings with Tuya control, schedules and Alexa/Google Assistant support 5–20m choices; 10 LEDs per metre; 5V USB power
Twinkly Strings Multicolor + White, 250 LEDs Camera-based mapping for more elaborate effects 20m lighted length; select the UK Type G variant
Philips Hue Festavia, 250 LEDs A string-light option for a Hue-based home 20m version with Bluetooth/Zigbee; check Bridge requirements for desired features
Zyko Smart LED Curtain Lights A broad display for patterns, messages and uploaded designs Different format from a tree string; choose by display width and height

If you only want a steady colour and an occasional effect, a simpler remote-controlled or timer set may be enough. Paying for an app or an elaborate display system makes sense when you will actually use the extra control.

For an app-controlled tree: Zyko Smart Christmas Tree Lights

Zyko's tree lights offer RGBIC colour, built-in effects and control through the Tuya app. You can adjust sections independently, set automatic on/off times, and use the listed Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant support.

There are four length options. All use the same stated density, so moving up a size buys more string and more LEDs rather than tighter spacing:

Zyko tree-light lengths and LED counts

Length LED count Density
5m 50 10 LEDs per metre
10m 100 10 LEDs per metre
15m 150 10 LEDs per metre
20m 200 10 LEDs per metre

Choose this route if you want colour scenes and routines without making camera-mapped animations the main buying requirement. The lights use a 5V USB connection, so confirm a suitable power source and the route to it before selecting a length. Do not assume every USB-powered lighting set includes a wall adapter.

The current written specifications do not establish a complete outdoor rating for this tree-light system. Keep the recommendation to indoor displays unless the rating and connection protection for the exact set are confirmed. An outdoor-looking product image is not a substitute for those details.

For mapped effects: Twinkly Strings

Twinkly's app uses a phone camera to map the position of the LEDs, making it a different proposition from selecting colours by segment. The Multicolor + White 250-LED version has a 20m lighted length, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity and a UK Type G option. Twinkly Music is a separate pairing route for sound-reactive effects.

Consider it when designing animations is part of the appeal. If you simply want colours and a schedule, decide whether you need that extra capability before buying into the system.

For an existing Hue home: Festavia string lights

The 250-LED, 20m Hue Festavia set supports colour gradients and white light, with Bluetooth and Zigbee listed. It is worth shortlisting when keeping lights within Hue matters more than choosing a standalone app.

The specified string is IP54, while its power supply is IP20. Treat those component ratings separately. Check which features need a Hue Bridge and include any required hub in the total purchase, rather than comparing the string price alone.

For a window or backdrop: choose a curtain display

A curtain of lights fills a rectangular area. That can make more sense than winding a long string around a window when your goal is a recognisable festive pattern or changing display.

Zyko Smart LED Curtain Lights are offered in 1 × 1m, 2 × 2m and 3 × 3m sizes, each with 400 LEDs. The app supports photos, GIFs, drawings and custom text, alongside brightness, music effects and scheduling.

The same LED count across larger sizes means the points are spread over a larger area. Choose the smaller or larger display for its actual location and viewing distance, rather than expecting the same detail density from every size. Our curtain-light buying guide covers those choices in more depth.

The product's IP44 guidance is for splash resistance and sheltered use, with the controller and USB connection protected from water. It should not be treated as an exposed roofline-lighting system.

How to compare smart Christmas lights before spending

Compare illuminated length and density together

LED count alone does not tell you how a set will look on your display. Compare it with the illuminated length, and distinguish that from any lead cable running to the first light. Two 20m strings can have different numbers of light points.

There is no single correct string length for every tree of a given height. Width, branch depth and whether you want a light outline or a dense display all change the requirement. Measure the intended route with an unpowered cord and allow for getting power to the display. That buying check is more reliable than choosing purely from the tree's height.

Separate RGBIC, segment control and camera mapping

These labels describe related but different capabilities. RGBIC allows multiple colours along a compatible set. Segment control lets you customise sections. A mapped system records where lights sit so effects can be arranged across the display's shape.

None of those terms, by itself, guarantees that every LED can be edited individually in the app. If that matters to you, look for that specific function in the exact product's documentation.

Check the smart home you actually use

App control does not automatically mean Apple Home, Matter, Alexa and Google Home support. Look for your platform by name and check whether an extra hub or account is required. For Zyko's tree lights, the published voice support names Alexa and Google Assistant; do not assume additional platforms from the Tuya connection alone.

Compare the complete purchase

Include the correct length, plug, power supply and any required accessories or hub. A low starting price may refer to a much shorter string than the one you need. For an evergreen comparison, decide which functions are worth paying for before looking at a temporary promotion.

When permanent outdoor lights are a different purchase

If your goal is a coloured outline around the house that stays up all year, move to a dedicated roofline system such as Zyko Permanent Outdoor Eaves Lights. Module spacing, usable run lengths, exterior mounting and the protection of every component matter more there than tree-light density.

For an indoor Christmas tree, shortlist the string formats first. Choose Zyko for its stated app, segment and scheduling functions; consider a mapped Twinkly system if designing effects is central to the purchase; or compare Festavia if Hue integration is the priority. Choose a curtain display when the shape of the space calls for one.

Check delivery estimates before ordering for a particular decorating date. Leave time for processing as well as transit, and do not assume a Christmas deadline from a general estimate.
